How Much Interest Will I Pay on a Car Loan?
Total car-loan interest is the sum of scheduled payments minus the amount financed. The APR, loan term, principal, payment timing, and fees all affect the result.
Find the amount financed
Start with the out-the-door price, then subtract cash down and trade-in equity. Add any taxes, fees, or products that will be financed.
Compare terms, not only payments
A longer term can reduce the payment while increasing total interest and the time you may owe more than the car is worth.
Use the lender disclosure
Before signing, compare the APR, finance charge, amount financed, total of payments, and payment schedule in the contract.
