Formula used

In Quick mode, required monthly savings = [G − C(1 + r)ⁿ] × r ÷ [(1 + r)ⁿ − 1], where G is the goal, C is current savings, r is the monthly growth rate, and n is the number of months. At 0%, divide the remaining goal by the months available; the required contribution cannot be below $0.

Worked example

Starting with $2,000 and targeting $15,000 in three years, with a hypothetical 3% annual return compounded monthly and deposits made at month-end, requires about $340.56 per month.

How to understand the result

The monthly amount is a planning estimate. A positive assumed return can lower the modeled contribution but is not guaranteed; compare more than one return assumption, including 0%, when uncertainty matters.

Assumptions and limits

  • Quick mode uses monthly compounding and level end-of-month contributions
  • Current savings and future contributions earn the same constant hypothetical return
  • No withdrawals
  • Taxes and account fees are excluded

Frequently asked questions

What if the return is zero?

The remaining goal is divided evenly across the available months.

Should emergency savings be invested?

Liquidity and risk needs differ. Any result using a positive return is only a scenario, not a guaranteed outcome.
